The United States National Whitewater Center is the world’s largest multi-channel, re-circulating whitewater river and the only manmade structure of its kind in the country. Set amongst 300 wooded acres along the Catawba River, this $35 million, world-class recreation and training facility includes whitewater rafting and kayaking, rock climbing center with 5,700 feet of climbing surface, a ropes course, a conference center, a restaurant, and, of course, a gift shop.

This is a first-hand account of the geotechnical, construction, coordination, and communication related challenges involved in this three year project, including: site seismic and rock profiling, quality control testing, engineering evaluation and design for intermediate hazard dams and site infrastructure as well as state-of-the-art insitu soil testing for the structural fill around the project’s 600’ dam.
