Catawba County’s EcoComplex is a Renewable Energy Industrial Park combining university and private research, bioenergy development and production, industry, and waste management systems.
The EcoComplex design and development currently includes seven professional engineering firms, three universities, and over 15 professional engineers directly involved in the process. The EcoComplex designs incorporate synergetic and beneficial relationships with the fundamental goal to convert waste streams into commodities, which includes bioenergy and other beneficial by-streams that create a virtually closed system. Landfill and wastewater sludge digester gases are employed to produce electrical and heat energy. A bioenergy plant employs the green and renewable energy resources generated from woody and bio waste from EcoComplex entities to generate steam, heat, electricity and CO2. The Biodiesel Research Facility is a full biodiesel production facility providing fuel for County fleet and a biolab with dynameter for Appalachian State University research.
The EcoComplex business system promotes economic development through byproduct/resource management and by employing predominantly green and renewable energy, and the EcoComplex partnerships provide incubators for bioenergy research and product development.
This is an online seminar detailing the Catawba County’s EcoComplex project.
